The Learning Box

The Learning Box is a site that has activities that would appeal from K (with assistance) to Gr. 6 students. It consists of a series of 11 hands on shockwave and flash activities that cover Math, Science and Language Arts.
Included in this series are: The Case of the Watermelon Patch Mystery, Manny’s Rumba, Flowering Fractions, Investigating Air, BT Bear Catches 10, Hank The Cowdog Activity, Call 911, The Fort Worth Herd and Etch.
Manny’s Rumba, Flowering Fractions and BT Bear Catches 10 are Math activities. Manny’s Rumba is a base 10 blocks activity that uses the one’s, ten’s and hundred’s blocks to answer questions.
When I taught computers to primary students, this was a great activity to reinforce the use of the base 10 block manipulatives that the students were doing in class. BT Bear Catches 10 is a fun and interactive game designed to help students recognize the one’s blocks. The Flowering Fractions activity I found to be the most challenging of all the activities. This is a great activity for any student learning about fractions.
Levels of difficulty increase with each successful completion of matching fraction petals to the flowers to make them whole. Once you reach level 3, you really have to know your fractions. This would be a great activity even for grade 6 students as a review of fractions.
The Case of the Watermelon Patch Mystery is a great activity to reinforce idioms. Students need to match up the sentence to complete the idioms such as: a stitch in time saves nine; all that glitters is not gold; two wrongs don’t make a right.
Investigating Air is an interactive science activity suitable for primary students. Find out what floats, what doesn’t and what wind does to some objects.
There are some great activities here which can be easily integrated into the curriculum. These programs would be a fantastic addition to any buddy program you have in your school between senior and primary students. They are fun and educational all at the same time!
